BOSTON, MA - March 18, 2008 Senator Anthony Galluccio (D) and Representative Jeffrey Sanchez (D) teamed up today with Junior Achievement of Eastern Massachusetts to recognize four companies that exemplify the best in business practices and community involvement. At the Massachusetts State House, Senator Anthony Galluccio and Representative Jeffrey Sanchez together announced the 2008 Inductee Companies to the Junior Achievement Boston Business Hall of Fame. The companies selected for induction include Commodore Builders, Geoff & Drew’s Incredible Cookies, Mullen and State Street Corporation. The Junior Achievement Boston Business Hall of Fame recognizes companies for their excellence in three key areas: success in the free enterprise system, proven commitment to the community, especially youth and education, and insistence on growth and investment in Eastern Massachusetts. Junior Achievement provides programs to students that teach about business, financial literacy, workforce readiness and the importance of staying in school. All programs are provided at no cost to the schools and other organizations and are taught by volunteers from the business community. Representative Sanchez was pleased to participate and said “Junior Achievement provides vital programs for students that provide hands on learning and real workforce readiness skills. I am happy to support their efforts in showing all young people that there is a wealth of possibilities for their futures and supplying them with the skills they need to achieve those possibilities.” Every company announced this morning is recognized in their industry and by the overall community for their commitment to achieve high results in both the professional and civic arenas, especially in Eastern Massachusetts. Every company selected offers its employees paid time off for volunteering, sponsors local charitable events, contributes in-kind to local organizations and each engage in pro-bono work. Balanced with their community support, each of these companies is engaged in the personal development of their own employees. Each company has established career progression models with defined tracks for growth and has strong participation from their employees. Importantly, each company scored very high for their investment in the growth of the Eastern Massachusetts economy.
“We are proud to honor the good work of these companies, as they have demonstrated an outstanding level of dedication to the communities they serve,” said David C. Eustis, Jr., President of Junior Achievement.

Inc Magazine - Me Want Cash Up Front - Getting Customers To Prepay Hannah Clark - September, 2007 For a company, getting paid on time can mean the difference between having cash for an expansion and borrowing to pay the bills. But if you're a minor vendor, you may be last on your customers' payment priority list. One solution: getting clients to pay in advance. That's easier said than done, of course, because your customers like holding on to their cash as much as you like seeing them part with it. Nevertheless, clients will prepay if given the right incentives. Following are three stories of business owners who got sick of waiting around for payment and decided to do something about it.
1. The coaxer
The company: Geoff & Drew's Incredible Cookies, Boston
The problem: In 2004 Geoff & Drew's wanted to take on bigger orders. Their company, founded in 2001, sells cookies, brownies, and other baked treats in decorative boxes and gift baskets, mainly to corporate customers. The average order had hovered around $2,000, but it was creeping up to $5,000 and some customers were asking for as much as $40,000 worth of goodies. Geoff & Drew's had no outside investors, and only 10 percent of customers paid in advance. If a big customer failed to pay, the company would lose a major chunk of working capital.
The solution: Drew Koven, the CEO, started talking to corporate buyers at trade shows to learn what would induce them to pay in advance. Buyers have different trigger points, he learned--some want discounts, but many respond to other incentives. So the company started offering priority shipping, specially designed gift boxes, custom cards, and custom ribbon to those willing to prepay. And yes, the company gives discounts, too. When customers were wary of paying an unknown vendor in advance, Geoff & Drew's offered references. Or, Koven would hop on the phone to talk personally with buyers. "It's really hard to ask people to prepay when they don't know who you are," says Koven.
The result: By the end of the year, Koven says, about a third of his customers were paying in advance. Now, more than half prepay. The perks dent profit margins, but having cash on hand has allowed the company to fill orders as large as $100,000.
The bottom line: Find out what they want, and they'll give you what you want.
MOVING BUSINESS AND CULTURE FORWARD
VIRGIN ATLANTIC CELEBRATES 2007 JETROSEXUAL AWARDS
Norwalk, CT (May 21, 2007) – Virgin Atlantic Airways announced today at an award ceremony in Boston, MA that Drew Koven, Chief of 100% Customer Satisfaction of Geoff & Drew's Incredible Cookies, has been awarded as their Jetrosexual for 2007, rewarding the ultimate entrepreneur that best represents the spirit of innovation and customer service.
The award celebrates a new emerging business culture of entrepreneurs who move business and culture forward each and every day. Ignoring borders and time zones, Drew, in essence, is making the world smaller with each cookie and customer experience.
In accepting the award, Drew Koven commented that "Geoff & Drew's Incredible Cookies is made up of people who are constantly looking for different or better ways to deliver, raise the bar in our industry and simply succeed where no one else would dare seek to go - flawless customer experiences."
Geoff & Drew's Incredible Cookies like Virgin Atlantic promises to always be much more than just another gift of cookies. At a time when industries seem to be taking services away from consumers, Geoff & Drew's like Virgin Atlantic gives more than ever, a principle personified by Drew Koven and the Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, Sir Richard Branson.
Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, commented:
“When I started Virgin Atlantic, we launched with just one flight. Everybody – and I mean everybody – said the business would not succeed. However, much to the dismay of some of our competitors, we are now 23 years strong. The only reason we've been able to reach this milestone is due to our customers – learning from them and implementing their suggestions have effectively helped us change the flight experience. Now, we have gone from just one flight to serving 28 destinations around the world.”
“So many people didn't think any of this would be possible when we started out. That is why it is so important to celebrate those individuals – the entrepreneurs, the rock stars of their industries - that work hard and deliver, even in the face of what others see as impossible.”

Edge Publications - Delicious, Delivered - Jason Salzenstein, National Style & Travel Editor. (July 20, 2006) - I'm always a little bit hesitant when someone I know says something like, "Oh, I've got a friend who has a company that I think you should write about. "Unfortunately (especially in LA), more often than not what that translates to is "I know someone with a weird/scary/cheesy product that needs promoting..." Not so much my thing. However, my latest introduction came from my future sister-in-law, with three very good reasons to check out what she was recommending. First, I trust her opinion and wisdom immensely. Second, the company she suggested is local, which is always a bonus. Finally, this company- Geoff & Drew's, specializes in cookies and brownies- how can you go wrong with that? Of course, being that my future sister-in-law is the greatest baker I know (she owned her own bakery in San Francisco before moving into motherhood) only gave her praise of this company more weight, although I have to admit that I was a little skeptical that they could be as good as her homemade delights. I'm happy to report that they were! When a beautiful brown box appeared on my doorstep the day after making contact with Geoff & Drew's, even before I opened the box I knew that this experience was going to be good.I was right. First of all, unlike most companies selling baked goods online, Geoff & Drew's is not a quaint, precious, country-bumpkin, white-goose-with-a-big-blue-ribbon-around-it's-neck type of company. On the other hand, they're also not as generically stodgy looking as some of the "corporate gifting" companies out there. In short, they've got style. Right away, from both the website and the box, I could tell that the company is neither run by a corporate giant, nor someone's grandmother. (Not that there's anything wrong with grandmothers running companies, it's just not my style.) Instead, what you get are beautiful products, elegantly presented in a style that would fit in just as well at a NY Bar Mitzvah as it would an A-list pool party in LA. Geoff & Drew's style is modern and sophisticated, with just the right amount of warmth. (And once you actually start eating the goods, the warmth factor goes up exponentially!) While you could definitely send these gourmet gift boxes to mom, it's the first time that I've seen boxes of cookies and sweets that I'd feel comfortable sending to colleagues in the style, fashion or design industry. In fact, I've already got a mental list of people who are going to get these boxes come holiday time, and they're just going to have to drop their no-sugar diets when they see them. Now, being spoiled by the fact that my sister-in-law is always making fresh cookies for dessert, I wasn't prepared to be so wowed by what was inside the box. Sure, they were beautifully wrapped, looked gorgeous, and seemed to be filled with chocolate, but I've had gourmet cookies before- what's the difference? The difference, it turns out, is in the ingredients. Like homemade cookies, Geoff & Drew's delights are made with real ingredients, not a bunch of fillers, preservatives and crap. In fact, the butter and chocolate content is so high, that in the summer the goodies come with a note to keep them in the fridge so that they don't get too smooshy (and yes, 'smooshy' is in fact a word...). Dough is made fresh daily, and never frozen, and they use chocolate chunks with high cocoa butter content, pure vanilla extract and premium nuts and butter. The recipes they use have been passed down for three generations and small batch sizes mean that you get better cookies, with more chocolate chunks! Brownies and cookies are made to order, and since orders are baked, shipped, and arrive in 24-48 hours of being placed, short of baking them yourself and hand delivering them, it doesn't get any fresher than this. Geoff & Drew's signature goodies are of course their cookies (Chocolate Chip Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin, Double Fudge, Peanut Butter and Black & White) and brownies (fabulous Chocolate Chunk, with or without Toffee), but they also offer gift baskets, with everything from gourmet snacks to coffee and candy, to meats and cheese. Once you taste their goodies, there's no going back. Gooey, yummy goodness seems like the perfect description, and it's extremely difficult to eat just one, so keep that in mind when ordering (i.e. if you're a late-night sweets lover, get the small box!). You could easily pass these off as homemade (because they practically are), but unless you're Martha Stewart, don't even try; the cookies and brownies are perfection- like heaven on your doorstep. Ordering couldn't be easier, and their website is as fabulous - as their products. For gift giving, showing appreciation, or just to indulge in a treat for yourself, Geoff & Drew's is the way to go. In short, we're big fans.

Boston Globe - Sugar and Spice for the holidays - Cookie company hits sweet formula (December 4, 2005) - The holidays weren't always quite this crazy for Geoff & Drew's, a gourmet cookie and brownie maker in Brighton Center. Started four years ago as a late-night cookie delivery service, the business really took off when it refocused its efforts on the national and international mail-order market (www.gdcookies.com). The company baked its millionth cookie last March and expects its 2-millionth to come out of the oven at some point around the New Year -- but only after the mixers, bakers, and boxers have put in a string of 12-, 14-, or even 36-hour days. How do they keep going? 'I, thankfully, have been blessed with not needing much sleep," says cofounder and head of customer satisfaction Drew Koven. 'I'm typically sleeping two hours, three hours a day."Such endurance is key in December, when a typical day's baking is five to eight times as busy as the rest of the year, and production of 25,000 cookies counts as a slow day. For the holiday rush, the company rents two additional facilities in Brighton -- one for baking, one for shipping -- and hires an extra 20 to 30 people, and very long days are still required of all hands. 'I think I stop counting after a certain period of time," says Hilary Meshken, vice president of operations. All of this may sound like pandemonium, and in a way it is, but on a recent visit, everyone in the main facility was smiling even though they were barely into hour three of a 12-hour-plus day. For head baker Paolo De Silva, the busy times are good for two reasons -- more money and more cookies -- but surprisingly, it's conversation, not cookies, that serves as the main form of energy here.'If you keep quiet, you [get] so tired," says assistant baker Wander De Oliveira. 'But if you talk, it's good. That's why I like to work here. "It also helps that, on a recent morning shift, nearly everyone working there is related to someone else: Everyone except Meshken is Brazilian, and everyone including Meshken looks up to 'Tia" (aunt), 42-year-old Sirlene Barros, who was a teacher and baker back in Brazil. She smiles and laughs as she points out relatives around the room. 'My cousin, my nephew, and my nephew, my cousins, my niece, my friends," she says, adding that there is, sometimes, a downside to being the oldest at what has become a daily family gathering: The younger ones, she says, 'talk too much!" But it does pass the time, and lightens the load of turning 50-pound bags of flour, sugar, and oatmeal into hefty blobs of dough. 'It's fun. It's not the kind of place where you're looking at your clock thinking, 'OK, three more hours to lunch.' There are side effects, though -- at least, according to Leon Barsoum, vice president of marketing, who gets pressed into service on the production line during the rush. It's not sugarplums that dance in his head.'I dream and dream about cookies and brownies." - Will Kilburn
Daily Candy (October 19, 2005) - Cookie Monger - Before you hit the 4-year-old Thin Mints in the back of the cupboard (ew, already), call in still-warm-from-the-oven support. Geoff & Drew's Brighton-based bakery can cure everything from co-ed munchies to urban professionals' once-a-month binge with boxes of just-baked cookies delivered directly to you. They start at 9 a.m. and (here's the genius part) run until 1 a.m. every night. You can fill your dessert cravings with classic chocolate chip, black and white chunk, and giant twelve-inch cookies. Did we mention they do brownies and gift specials, too? Geoff & Drew's cookies may be the best thing to hit your late night since dashing Mr. Darcy himself.
The Boston Globe (March 13, 2005) - Cookies? They've baked a million, and counting - It's a delicious milestone: the millionth cookie made. The mark, passed 10 days ago at Geoff & Drew's Cookies, occurred somewhere in a mixed order of 24. The company was formed in 2001 when Koven and his friends Geoff Auslen and Carol Spickler wanted a career change. 'We just woke up one day and said, 'We're not doing what we love to do,' " says Koven, 'and we kind of all came to the same conclusion at the same time." That conclusion: Aim to make and sell the best cookies around. The focus is on one- to two-day delivery of cookies baked to order, not just in the Boston area but also across the country. The friends emphasize fresh, high-quality ingredients, and stick to cookie classics, like chocolate chunk, oatmeal raisin, M&M, peanut butter, double fudge, black and white chip, as well as brownies, shortbread, and biscotti. 'We'll keep baking as long as people keep enjoying them," Drew Koven says. 'That's what it's all about." - Will Kilburn

Chicago Tribune - Red, white and sweet (September 8, 2004) - Whatever your political leanings, these sugar cookies from Geoff & Drew's should get a vote from your sweet tooth. The buttery cookies, with a pleasant but not cloying frosting, impressed us, as did the pretty detailing. Mail-order only; visit online at www.geoffanddrews.com or call (866) 437-3928. - Renee Enna
Times Herald-Record (August, 2004) - Karen loves ... a good cookie - We don't talk politics in our house. It's not that the subject doesn't come up. It does. A lot. But because both my husband and I are pretty darned opinionated, the "talks" almost always devolve into yelling. I once threatened him in front of his mother. It turned out OK, 'cause she was on my side.(In case you want to take sides, he's the one with the red-white-and-blue W magnet on the back of the car. I'm not.) So, we have an uneasy detente where he rails against the media and anyone who looks cross-eyed at the president and I shrug and say "whatever, dear." But, now, thanks to Geoff & Drew, I can take my frustration out biting the heads off gourmet cookies. Yup. The Boston-based gift gurus are marketing donkey and elephant shortbread cookies just in time for Election '04. The political mascots are combined with chocolate chunk cookies in a white gift box, tied up with red, white and blue ribbon A batch costs $26.
